Pests That Will Cause Your Allergies to Flare Up

21st Apr 2022

Springtime in Wisconsin is bittersweet, to say the least. The snow is starting to melt, the temperature allows us to peel off the layers and the natural landscape turns a little more green. With these warmer temperatures come other things such as seasonal pests and allergies. K&C Pest Control has created a list of pests that may cause your allergies to flare up.

Which pests cause allergy reactions?

Cockroaches

An estimated 63% of homes in the United States have cockroaches. These pests have the ability to live in a wide range of temperatures which makes them a nuisance all year round. Cockroaches can cause allergic reactions and worsen asthma symptoms from cockroach droppings, saliva, skin shed or deposited body parts. Infestations can cause skin rashes, itchy/watery eyes, coughing, ear infections, congestion or chest tightness.

Rodents

If you hear scurrying in the walls of your home or business or find droppings near your food supply, it’s a sign you have a rodent infestation. Allergies from these pests are from pheromones and bacteria in their droppings, urine, saliva or skin. Allergy symptoms from rodents can include nausea, stuffy nose, itchy skin/nose/throat, eczema, sneezing, congestion, hives or asthma attacks.

Dust Mites

While they aren’t seen by the naked eye, Dust Mites make themselves at home in your furniture, floors and window sills. They spread their allergens through their waste which often mixes in with cockroach dust and mold. Their favorite places are where people meet since they feed on dead skin cells. Reactions to Dust Mites include persistent coughing, watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing and asthma attacks.

Fruit Flies

These little flies may seem harmless but they travel from place to place picking up bacteria from rotting fruit or spoiled food as they go. Some of the symptoms they can cause include small red bumps on your skin, diarrhea and respiratory symptoms.

Stink Bugs

When crushed, stink bugs produce a chemical that can cause symptoms in humans. Some of these symptoms include stuffy or runny nose, pink eye or dermatitis. If you come across a crushed stink bug, scrub yourself so the chemical doesn’t stay on your skin.

How to prevent springtime pests

The best way to prevent symptoms of these pests is by keeping your space as clean as possible. Pests often love making themselves comfortable near standing water, food or debris.
