Ways To Keep Your Holiday Decorations Pest Free
Decorating for the holidays is a great way to spread cheer and get in the festive spirit. It is, however, important to pack and unpack decorations with care to keep your home free of pests that could be looking for a new home in storage containers. Use these tips to keep your holiday decorations pest free.
Unpack Carefully
Many people keep their decorations in basements or attics, which are particularly susceptible to insects and rodents. It’s best to unpack boxes outside and check for signs of rodent droppings or gnaw marks.
Inspect
Carefully inspect decorations, especially when it comes to greenery like trees, wreaths and garland. Spiders and ticks recognize these items as natural habitats. Carefully comb over these pieces of decor, particularly if they are coming from outdoor storage or it they are real plants. A variety of insects call evergreen trees home, so it’s important to take the necessary steps before bringing it inside.
Use Bins For Storage
To help avoid the threat of rodents, it’s a good idea to use plastic bins for storage instead of cardboard. A sealed container will be able to protect decorations from a number of things, including flooding, pests and dust.
Keep Wood At A Distance
If you have a fireplace in your home, be sure to store wood at least 20 feet from your home and brush it off before bringing it indoors. Pests like beetles, spiders and ants can get inside by hiding in the logs.
