29th Aug 2018

Summer and fall are the perfect season to spend time outside with family and friends. While it can be enjoyable, it’s also important be aware of lurking pests. One specific threat to outdoor fun are ticks. Use these five tips to prevent tick bites when you’re out and about this summer.

  1. Dress Smart

If you’re going to be spending time in a wooded area or tall grass, wear tick-repelling clothes, like pants, long sleeves and closed-toe shoes. It can also be beneficial to wear light colored clothing to make it easier to see ticks.

  1. Keep Your Yard Maintained

Ticks don’t just stick to wooded areas, they can also venture into your backyard. To prevent ticks from making your lawn their new home, it’s important to keep grass cut and remove weeds, woodpiles and debris. All of these things can attract ticks and other pests. You should also keep shrubs, bushes and other vegetation well maintained, especially around decks, patios and play areas.

  1. Use Insect Repellent

Don’t forget the bug spray when you’re spending time outside. It doesn’t just keep away ticks, but can also deter mosquitoes and other biting pests.

  1. Stay On The Trail

When you’re going for nature walks or hikes, stay in the center of the trail and away from vegetation where ticks could be hiding.

  1. Protect Your Pets
When you’re thinking about tick prevention, don’t forget about your pets! Avoid walking your dog in tall grass, and check for ticks after spending time outside. Pets are just as susceptible to tick bites as humans. You can also get your dog a tick repellent collar for extra protection.
