Wisconsin’s Most Common Spring Bugs

09th Mar 2023

Warmer weather here in Wisconsin means the return of common spring pests that we haven’t seen since the temperatures dropped. We’ll review the common spring bugs in Wisconsin and when you should contact a pest control specialist to prevent them from invading your home or business.

Ants

Wisconsin ants — like acrobat ants, carpenter ants, field ants, or pavement ants — will make their home near yours. They’re attracted to food scraps, so they enter your home or business in search of crumbs and other goodies.

Seeing just one ant in your home or business can mean an ant infestation is coming. If you see a few of them walking in a line, they’ve likely already made your home theirs.

Ants can carry harmful bacteria and pose potential health issues for you, your family, and your employees. While you can use off-the-shelf ant bait and traps, ants can quickly adjust their routes. You’ll likely still have a problem until you eliminate their points of entry.

Wasps and Yellow Jackets

Being in Wisconsin, we love to spend time outside once the weather allows. No one likes the company of wasps while you’re trying to enjoy the sunshine. And it’s especially unsettling to see a wasp nest in the corners of your home, garage, or business.

There are home remedies and sprays for getting rid of wasps in and around your home, but we recommend contacting our team to keep yourself safe from potential stings or swarms.

Stink Bugs

Stink bugs release a skunk-like foul odor if you crush them, making them difficult to remove once in your home or business.

They’re attracted to food scraps and light, entering your building through cracks, crevices, or holes that aren’t always visible. If they are in your home or business, you’ll likely find them near baseboards, windows, or door trims.

Centipedes

This common Wisconsin spring pest can make your skin crawl when you see them. They have a longer body length of about 1 ½ inches and up to 15 pairs of long legs.

Centipedes can bite, but it will usually only result in a minor reaction, like a small red bump similar to a mosquito bite.

House centipedes will feed on other insects in your home and gravitate toward warmth and small spaces.

Fleas

Fleas often don’t survive the harsh Wisconsin winters but will start to become active as early as March. Fleas have a 100-day lifespan and can produce up to 400 offspring in their lifetime.

Dogs and other pets allowed outdoors can carry fleas into your home, causing bites, bumps, and other issues for both animals and humans.

Prevent fleas from entering your home with flea and tick treatment for your pet. We also recommend frequent grooming and consistent vacuuming to reduce the likelihood of a flea infestation.

Spiders

Although they aren’t categorized as a bug, spiders are one of the most common pests you’ll see around the Fox Cities area this spring. The most common Wisconsin spiders are barn spiders, harvestmen or “daddy longlegs,” and the common house spider.

Spiders prefer dark areas such as basements, attics, cracks or crevices in your walls, and under your furniture. You may also find spiders in your car mirrors this spring and summer.

The pest control experts at K&C Pest Control can find where spiders have the potential to enter your home or business and prevent them from becoming an issue for your family or employees this spring.
